For clarification: Rockefeller is infamous for having sent a militia to
the on-strike mining town of Ludlow, Colorado. When the strikers
refused to go back to work, the militia opened fire and killed 53
people, including 13 who were wives or children.
The public response to this act inspired Rockefeller to hire the first
public relations manager -- Ivy Lee. It was Ivy Lee who concocted the
story of Rockefeller giving change to children in the streets, and who
convinced Rockefeller to start financing museums and charities. In
doing this, he was able to remake Rockefeller's image into that of a
philanthropist. Few today even know that Rockefeller was initially
hated and distrusted by the general public.
Great interview here:

(also discusses some of AT&T's early attempts to assert its own
monopoly.)
