I highly recommend you pick up the O'Reilly book, "DNS & BIND".  It's 
probably far more than you'll ever need to know about either, but 
it's considered the authoritative DNS book among most sysadmins I 
know.

Hope that helps.  Sorry I can't answer your questions for you, but 
I've never run a DNS environment in that manner, I've always hosted 
the entire domain I was in.  Actually, let me clarify, I always had 
Derek around to do that for me ;)
