You can't go wrong with Epson, they probably have the best SANE support.
There is one exception (one of the Perfection series, the 1250 IIRC), but
the rest of their scanners, including USB ones, are well supported. I run
a Stylus Scan 2500 - a combo printer/scanner - over a USB connection using
Mandrake 8.2, and have had no trouble with it at all.
That one Perfection uses a different chipset from all of the other ones.
