Not really...

Close...

T doesn't actually exist. It was planned, but then the need for it
went away/changed, so never got implemented. Which may have been the
cause for my problem all along, though I don't understand why.

Granted, traffic routed to that gateway would never get anywhere, but
in theory, there should never be any traffic destined for that
gateway! If I'm coming in on the 10.241.38/24 interface to a node,
then the return traffic should follow the routh for that network.
Even though there were 2 default routes, shouldn't the traffic (in
theory) get sent out both interfaces (if what you described as
"matching all packets" is accurate)?

Yes, I had tcmdump monitoring all interfaces on C, and there were no
'icmp echo reply' packets being generated for any of the interfaces.
The 'icmp echo request' was coming in on the 10.241.38/24 interface.

And, as much as I hate to admit that Derek might have been right
about anything, it appears that may be the case ;) I removed the
gateway from the 192.168.10/24 interfaces, and haven't noticed a
recurrence of the problem since then (of course, since this was a
totally sporatic problem, I'm not totally convinced that it is
solved, but it's looking like it).

Nope.

It may look like I'm just sitting here doing nothing,
but I'm really actively waiting for all my problems to go away.

If you're not having fun, you're not doing it right!
