BTW, this syntax is, AFAICT, bash-specific.  There appears to be no
mention of it in the man pages for sh-bourne, sh-posix, or ksh on my
HP-UX system... nor in my shell programming book.  And indeed, it
produces a syntax error in all of those shells.
