I hardly ever use those front end tools because
apt-get and friends always seem to be able to do what
I want.  However, allow me to suggest that you take
aptitude out for a test drive; it seemed to me to be
what dselect would be if you could rewrite it to keep
its good characteristics and fix a lot of the bad ones...
