You're right maddog, that's what he should bring along. I've been amazed at
how much hardware works with Linux with no tweaking needed at all. The area
that seems to be the most painful is power management and if you aren't
running a laptop, it's not terribly important (in my opinion). The only
failure I've had booting Knoppix was an old Compaq Presario machine that
came my way recently. It just couldn't handle the video for some reason.
Most clones just seem to work.

I usually take along the latest hardware compatibility list and/or a copy
of Knoppix to boot on the suspect system.
