Emacs auto-modes and tabs

OK, then Programmer B looks at Programmer A's code, decides to add a
line of code, but doesn't notice that Programmer A used tabs instead
of spaces (this is easy enough to do), inserts the line of code.
Later, Programmer A complains to Programmer B that the code that
he/she inserted "didn't go along with my indentation style".

OBTW, even though I am being really abstract here, I can think of
quite a few times in my own experience where this scenerio has
happened.


The current status of inserting spaces and tabs in source files is
currently a mess, and I personally have no hope that this will ever be
resolved.
