Very interesting.  I had often wondered if something like this would 
happen when people link directly to the ad-less/reduced printer-friendly 
versions of pages.  I'd rather see more pages like this than have them 
remove the feature altogether (speaking as one who really likes to read 
articles as printer-friendly).
