Since all the machines in question are (apparently) destined to be DHCP clients of the server machine he's setting up, isn't it basically REQUIRED that they all be reachable without going through a router? Doesn't that just make the router issue go away? (Unless, as I suggested, he's considering something tricky like DHCP proxy...)
