Booting Debian to single user with SCSI Raid

If you can't just give lilo the '-s' option, i'd recommend the slack boot
disk. disk 1 should be all you need, just one floppy.
just stick it in and when you get the lilo prompt you can do something like
'boot root=/dev/whatever -s'.
if that doesnt have support in-kernel for your scsi stuff, get the second
boot disk and boot into the slack 'install'. but instead of running the
install program, load the scsi modules supports (probably yet another floppy)
and mount the drive as you normally do.
also, wasnt 'knoppix' meant to be a rescue system (i really dont remember..)
does the system have a bootable cd-rom drive?
