It appears there never was a problem, other than a lack of knowledge on my part.
Paul Lussier pointed out that as there is no filesystem on audio an CD, it is
somewhat difficult to mount one as I was trying to do. This was my problem.
I had recently decided to see how well my USB CD drive worked under Linux.
Attempting to verify this with an audio CD was, as I now realize, not the best
choice. At work, where all we use is Windows, an audio CD will show up as such in a
file manager. It was my, admittedly naive, assumption that something similar would
happen under Linux. So when I tried to mount the USB CD drive with the audio CD in
it and got error messages, but was then able to mount data CDs normally, and not
realizing the whole filesystem problem that Paul mentioned, my assumption was that
it must be the disc itself. That I got similar errors when using my IDE CD drive
only reinforced my suspicions that it was the disc rather than the drive. But when
I took the disc to work the next day and tried it in my Windows computer there I got
precisely what I expected to see with normal audio CDs; I was flummoxed.
Once I realized that the errors I was getting with Linux made sense because what I
was asking it to do was strange (thanks Paul), I went right to XMMS which works just
fine. So, as you see, there never was a problem outside of my misunderstanding.
And thanks to all for the insight. Most of the topics in this group are somewhat
over my experience level, but I usually manage to learn something.
I have to admit how pleasantly surprised I am with Linux and hardware
detection/interoperation. I've never made any attempt to get some of my peripherals
to function under Linux because I assumed it would require significant time to
configure everything and get them running right. I've now got my Handspring,
printer, and USB CD drive running with very little effort. My scanner isn't
supported under SANE, but three out of four isn't bad.
