  Look, Derek, if someone doesn't know the language, they're going to have
trouble.  Stop trying to make up these arguments that say, "Well, if one guy
has only programmed an Apple //e in assembler, and this other guy has only
used C functions standardized before 1992, and you locked them both in a
room with a computer running Slackware 2.0, Perl is hard to use."  :-)
