I disagree.  FWIW, I showed my one-liner to two people here who have 
less knowledge of perl than you do and it took them less than 5 
minutes to figure this out.  They also have less over-all UNIX 
experience than the average newbie on this list, certainly less than 
Kenny or mod, both of whom, if they had cared to I'm sure, could have 
figured either one-liner out in as much time.
