Handling inbound calls while dialed-up

The web page I pointed to says that it's up to the ISP how long your modem
can be on hold. Netzero is supposed to have completely switched over to v.92
cable equipment. I haven't used them except for a short period when I was
troubleshooting a customer problem and needed a free internet dial-up
account. Since then they've gone to a regular per month charge. I don't know
if they're any good.

I believe this is a feature of the v.92 standard. The following link isn't a
deep technical description but it does talk about the modem on hold stuff:

Can somebody supply (or point to) an explanation of the
mechanics that make it possible for a dialed-up peecee
to receive notification of inbound calls? I'm guessing
it's some trick based on forward-on-busy to a number
that somehow relays to particular port at my currently
assigned IP address, which would seem to require
- some amount of coordination between telco and ISP.
- some software on my machine prepared to respond
on the port in question.
Did I also see that you can then digitize the calls
and have a conversation using the peecee's sound card
while dialed up?
Can Linux boxes can do anything like this?
