Handling inbound calls while dialed-up

That sounds like he has something else thing. He could have Cable/DSL and
uses a modem just to get callerID info or has voicemail software, I know
lots of people that do that.
I don't see how it's possible to talk on the phone while using a normal
phone modem without some very special equipment, a second line, or an
EXTREAM loss of bandwidth.
