I, as well, use the GIMP for this.  While it may not solve your problem,
maybe this will help:  

	Pencil tool: Make a dot. Hold shift and control while using the
pencil.  Make another Dot.  You've got a straight line from dot to dot. 

Is this what you're already doing and what you meant by awkward?
