I personally don't see teaching command line tools as a problem.  
Conversely, I see it as a benefit, since the GUIs are essentially 
unique to each distro, whereas the command line tools are (for the 
most part) the same not only from distro to distro, but also carry 
over more generally to most flavors of UNIX.

Of course, it all boils down to one question:

	What are you trying to teach?

Are you going for basic sys admin stuff, pure end-user functionality, 
etc.?
