Backplanes are typically passive, so there is nothing to fail.  Some can
be replaced (something to ask the potential vendor).  The backplanes
we used couldn't, but they were built such that they could take a short
of a couple thousand volts and even then, it would only fry that blade
connection.  The others would continue working.
