I don't see any indications of a problem.

Kernel is 1.4.18-14, the one that installed with RH 8.0.  I haven't changed
it.  I've disconnected my parallel port UMAX 1220P scanner to see if that
makes any difference, although this last time it had never been powered on.

At this point, I think I'll just wait for the lockup to happen again, and then 
  I'll restart XFree86 to see if it recovers.
