A wise man once said, "Never attribute to malice that which is adequately
explained by stupidity." When it comes to journalism[1], I would say "Never
attribute to collusion that which is adequately explained by
sensationalism."
Consider that press houses like ZD generate money based on advertising.
The more people they have reading their stuff, the more money they make on
advertising. Now, what do you think draws more readers: Articles which take
a calm, measured approach, providing analysis based only on hard evidence,
or stories containing radical opinions on controversial subjects? Articles
like this one [2] draw Linux zealots like garbage draws flies. ZD can just
sit back and watch the hits come in.
Footnotes
---------
[1] I use the term loosely.
[2] Or rather, as I understand this one to be; I avoid articles like this
for the reasons I describe above.
