For the newbies (book question)

Hypothetical situation (of course) for you who are new to Linux.
Which is more appealing:
1) A Linux book that covers EVERYTHING about your distribution of choice.
It would be about 1000-1500 pages and cost $60.
2) Two Linux books. One that covers the basics, mostly geared towards
new home users - the other covers more advanced topics geared towards
servers in the home/office. Fewer pages (400ish per book) and each book
would be on the order of $30-$40.
I know what I would pick, but I'm not a new user.
