For the newbies (book question)

None taken.  

But I think it speaks of the mindset of a large class of potential new Linux users. 
They don't care how or why it works (or doesn't work, as the case may be). 
Consequently, even the proposed 400 page book will likely be unappealing.  And 1000
pages is completely out of the question.  It is just a matter of too much perceived
work.

There is another class of people who are really interested in computers and
computing that want/need to learn Linux for myriad reasons.  They're likely to need
information on the spectrum of things that can be done with Linux.  Consequently
they (and by this I mean me) would be more interested in something with more
exhaustive coverage (to the extent that such a thing can be done).
