slow initial ssl sessions

Sounds to me like there's a chance that your apache server is trying to
do a reverse lookup on the ip your web browser is coming from.  If
you're running on a private network without reverse dns set up, it may
take a minute to decide to timeout when you initially connect...

This is just a guess though.
