weird man pages display problem

I fixed a lot of the font problems that I experienced on RH8.0 by
doing the following:

Edit /etc/sysconfig/i18n.

Change the SYSFONT line to:

   SYSFONT="lat0-sun16"

Add the following line too:

   SYSFONTACM="iso15"

And, for good measure, you probably need to reboot after this.
