[gnu/]linux fracas in may 1999 and GNHLUG archives

Sigh. The problem with backups is restoring them.

I seem to remember accidentally losing those archives back when I was
scrambling for disk space (and decided to move the archives to
mail-archive), thinking I could simply retrieve them from tape when
someone wanted them.

Well, that time finally came, and I discover that the tape drive that
wrote those tapes no longer works! (After finding the box of tapes for
that time period).

Does anyone have a drive capable of reading a DDS-2 tape with a
multi-volume tar archive on it? (Actually, I have to scan 12 tapes
because I've lost the piece of paper saying what's on each tape).

PS: a few years ago I started backing up to hard drives and rotating
them off to CDs.
