If you really did nothing, I'd forget about software: it almost (*almost*)
certainly means that some hardware went FUBAR.  I'd run the memory test,
but, if this machine is truly important, I'd consider getting a new
motherboard, NIC, etc., and testing the kaput system as time permits.
