I've been playing around with Suse 9.0 and I can confirm
that it doesn't suck.

It's true that the Debian "stable" release is
not updated often enough to please some people
but, FWIW, I've been running the "testing" and
"unstable" releases of Debian (which are about as
bleeding edge as most people can tolerate) since Nov
2000 and haven't had any problems worth mentioning.
