  I was actually thinking of using an HTTP-based mechanism, simple because I
suspect such a mechanism already exists, based on what the OP has talked
about.  I suspect they have some kind of password-protected website that
includes FTP URLs which are not (correctly) password-protected.  Rather then
trying to get the FTP servers to authenticate connections, it would likely
be easier to just put the files on the HTTP server.
