  How about IEEE 802.3-2002?  Clause 9.6.6 describes auto-partitioning and
auto-reconnection.  It is an optional feature, but very much a standardized
one.  (Note that being standardized doesn't mean anyone follows the
standard.  Or even that the standard actually works.)
