Oh boy.

This was exactly the sequence of events on the Linksys card I wrote about
when we were discussing bad NICs a little while back.

You could ping it to start with and then it would lock up later.  If the
manufacturer had purposely set out do devise a card which would waste the
maximal time in the field they could hardly have done better than Linksys
did with those NICs.
