Take a look at your /etc/nsswitch.conf file. What's the order next to the hosts entry? Is it files, dns? Or the other way around? You should set the order to files first.

Subject: I have a network problem with my hosts file :-(
Here's the deal.
533 > ls -l /etc/hosts
-rw-r--r-- 2 root root 264 Mar 7 2004 /etc/hosts
534 >
Here are the relevant entries from the file:
535 > cat /etc/hosts
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.0.4 saturn syslang.net
192.168.0.2 uranus
192.168.0.3 linus
The problem is that I don't seem to be able to access anything in my hosts
file by name. I can ping 127.0.0.1 but I can't ping localhost.
Here's the output of dig:
[root at saturn root]# dig localhost
; <<>> DiG 9.2.1 <<>> localhost
;; global options: printcmd
;; Got answer:

[root at saturn root]#
My ifconfig output shows that eth0, eth1 and lo are in fact up.
Anyone have any idea what this is?
Thanks :-(
