AC97 is really a "family" of sound cards, but support for them with Linux
is generally fairly good.

I'm going to assume you mean "Red Hat Linux 8". (There is more then one
"Linux" in the world.) If you have something else, let us know.
What happens if you login as "root" and run the "sndconfig" utility?

This is a somewhat more interesting. I would expect Red Hat Linux 9 to
work on any system that Red Hat Linux 8 worked on. I have to wonder if some
larger problem isn't present.
What is the brand and model of the system (e.g., "Dell Dimension 4200")?
If it is a "whitebox" or "clone" system, what is the brand and model of the
motherboard? If you don't know the answer, don't go crazy trying to find
out; there are other things we can try.
