dialup to MSN with Linux?

I'm helping a Win32-using friend by installing Linux on her computer.
I installed Mandrake and everything is working fine; I downloaded the
free driver for her Winmodem from linuxant (she'll upgrade to the $15,
uncapped version if she's happy with Linux), and I can successfully dial
up to my family's ISP (which is in Nebraska - good for testing purposes,
bad for regular access :-).

Unfortunately, my friend uses MSN as her ISP, and I can't get her
computer to connect successfully. I've been using KPPP, and it looks
like authentication is the problem.

I read here (
http://www.ssc.com/pipermail/linux-list/2003-March/015316.html ) that it
should work just fine to dial into MSN from a Linux box, but even after
I tried switching KPPP to "CHAP" instaed of "PAP/CHAP", I still had no
luck.

(Yes, I have verified with my friend that I have the correct username,
password, and phone numbers.)

So I have two questions:
1. does anyone have advice about how I can get this machine to connect
   to msn?
2. does anyone have a local dialup ISP they recommend over MSN (which
   costs $20/mo)?
