I will say this though: In today's world, the computer is an
essential tool which is used by virtually all job functions for a
variety of tasks. It has become a basic essential skill. If we are
not teaching computer skills to our children along with reading,
writing, and math, then that is a failure of our society.

I realized after re-reading my own post that I might have let the
non-tech folks *too* much off the hook, and I agree with you--hence why I've
also been the instigator and leader of many user-training sessions and PC
troubleshooting groups, and am a great believer in mandating basic computer
education in schools.

As for the comment about tech support jokes, I like them; they help
relieve tension. BUT, we must also remember that the people we're
making jokes about are real people, with problems that we're being
paid to solve for them. This is where a lot of us go wrong...
</snip>

And I'd also agree with you on this one, as well--after rethinking my
position, I don't mind that sort of light-hearted joking, as any group needs
to have the wind taken out of their sails every so often. Also, being a
theatre person as well, I definitely understand the need for--and have
participated in--plays that definitely satirize and rip apart various social
and political ideas and systems.
Anyway, as long as the sort of positive-thinking we're talking about
here keeps getting advanced in the Linux community, then I think we'll get
to keep discussing Linux for many years to come.
