Sound issue

Problem:
When I put in a music CD, it brings up the CD player just fine,
that goes out and finds disk info to display, the CD plays, and I can
hear it through the headphone jack on the front of the drive, but no
sound comes out of the speakers. Sometimes. It seems that running
something else that uses sound (or might) brings the speakers to life.
Playing with the volume control panel, however, does not bring them
to life.
I'm running RH9 on an ASUS mother board with a C-media CM8738
chip on board (whose microphone input has never worked, but that is,
perhaps a separate problem), using the cmpci driver.
Does anyone know if this:
1. is a problem with a known workaround, so the underlying problem
is going to be fixed?
2. is a problem that has been fixed, but the fix isn't going to be
put into the end of lifed RH9 update RPMs?
3. something I should investigate more fully myself and maybe
submit a fix for?
4. something I should mention on another list?
TIA - Bill
