samba problems

Seems as though I had a bad install last weekend so____  so now a new fresh
install of 5.1 (redhat)
and an uncompressed version of samba 3.0.5  now when i  issue the command
./configure from the source directory of samba i get an error mesage:
checking for gcc..........no
checking for cc.....no
 configure error no acceptable cc found in $path


I can find NO refference to this in the docs
does anyone have any insight??
