I still have the twelve floppy disks of Linux kernel source I used back 
in 1994 or 1995 to build Yggdrasil Linux.
I wouldn't wish that on anyone nowadays. :-)
I know there are various tiny Linux distributions aimed for routers, 
diagnostics and such. I haven't used them much.
Some names which I have tried are LRP (Linux Router Project - 
http://www.linuxrouter.org/), Coyote Firewall
(http://www.coyotelinux.com/) and Toms Rescue (http://www.toms.net/rb/). 
My purpose was primarily a router/
firewall. For general purpose use, I've read about muLinux 
(http://sunsite.auc.dk/mulinux/), but haven't used it.
