It's a very effective strategy, but it's a bit difficult to maintain.
If you have friends or relatives who are not security savvy, and use
Microsoft mailers (i.e. you're in their address book), spammers can
get your e-mail address that way. If you have family members who
thoughtfully sign you up for discounts or free promotions which are
nothing but spam address collectors, well...
But if you work at it, and you educate the people you communicate
with, it's still (in my opinion) the best way to eliminate spam.
Filters don't eliminate the mail from being delivered to you, and
spammers always find ways around them.
The web archives for both GNHLUG and BLU have almost certainly been
harvested. I sometimes see mail (in my sendmail logs, not actual
mail) to addresses that I only have ever used on those lists. FWIW.
