Backup software

I'm in the process of setting up a system that will need to do local
data backup to tape. My immediate reaction was that I probably wanted
to use Amanda, since the client is interested in going with an open
source solution. Having not played with tapes in over 6 years, I'm
looking to folks on the list for suggestions and/or help before I go too
far down any one particular path.
Is Amanda going to be overkill for backing up just a single system? The
tape drive is a Sony AIT drive - is this going to be a pain to configure
with Amanda? Is there another piece of software I should look at
instead? Would just a plain 'ole tar with a little bit of shell
scripting suffice?
Experiences, anecdotes, diatribes, etc all happily accepted. 8)
