multi-hop ssh port forwards?

Thanks for everybody's help on this.  I narrowed my problem down to 
using the hostname for the intermediate forwards instead of localhost.

To save some keystrokes going forward I put together a little 
calculator I could get to remotely that writes out an appropriate 
command line for up to 3 intermediate ssh hops.  It's undocumented, 
un-pretty, and has no error checking at this point but anybody's 
welcome to use it :) (fields are in user at host:port form).
