Sorry about the late response, I have something like 5000 unread messages
between my various list subscriptions :)
I've been using Gmail for about 3 months now, but ONLY for
archival/search means. IOW, when I subscribe to a list, I subscribe
twice, once for my personal account, and once for my gmail account.
I only use my gmail account for collecting e-mail list traffic. I do
not send e-mail from it, nor do I give it out to people as a means to
contact me by.
I've found it rather useful to be able to have an account which just
collects incoming e-mail which I can then use Google's search engine
for. It seems more efficient than indexing all my mail and searching
that way, which I used to do.
I still use my personal e-mail account for general correspondence,
since I hate web e-mail interfaces for composition and exmh/emacs are
infinitely better for that...
I barely notice the ads, especially since I seldom look in my gmail
account to do anything but search for something I recently read on a
list but can't remember when or what message. I would completely
avoid using gmail for this use if e-mail lists in general had better
archiving and search capabilities...
In general, I really like this use model of gmail, though I don't know
how it fits into the larger philisophical questions posed earlier by
Kevin et al.

It may look like I'm just sitting here doing nothing,
but I'm really actively waiting for all my problems to go away.
If you're not having fun, you're not doing it right!
