As others have mentioned, XP home doesn't do terminal server. Pro does.
As for connecting, rdesktop hostname.
Another tack is to install VNC but there's no security. With Cygwin,
you can install sshd and tunnel VNC through that. Maybe you could use
that to trigger remote assistance too.
FWIW with VNC (on windows (and mac?)) you share the screen w/ whoever
is in front of the machine locally. You can get into mouse wars and
they can take over after you login.
