Ok, so...
I decided to try a non-beta Mandrake install and see if that worked.
Running: MandrakeLinux 10.1 Official
[iarwain at alfred iarwain]$ uname -a
Linux alfred.datasquire.net 2.6.8.1-12mdk #1 Fri Oct 1 12:53:41 CEST
2004 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2200+ unknown GNU/Linux
BIOS WAS set to PnP OS = NO. I changed it to YES. No difference.
I plug in the device:
Apr 10 17:15:38 alfred kernel: usb 4-3: new high speed USB device using
address 4
Apr 10 17:15:38 alfred kernel: Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...
Apr 10 17:15:38 alfred kernel: scsi0 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass
Storage devices
Apr 10 17:15:38 alfred kernel: Vendor: Memorex Model: 52MAXX 3252AJ1
Rev: 4WS2
Apr 10 17:15:38 alfred kernel: Type: CD-ROM
ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Apr 10 17:15:42 alfred kernel: sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 255x/52x writer
cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
Apr 10 17:15:42 alfred kernel: usbcore: registered new driver usb-storage
Apr 10 17:15:42 alfred kernel: USB Mass Storage support registered.
Apr 10 17:15:43 alfred scsi.agent[4911]: cdrom at
/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:10.3/usb4/4-3/4-3:1.0/host0/0:0:0:0
...When k3b begins its work, the drive seems to be registered as a SCSI
device:
Apr 10 17:16:42 alfred kernel: Attached scsi generic sg0 at scsi0,
channel 0, id 0, lun 0, type 5
So far, so good.
It starts OK, then a few seconds into the burn, the progress bar stops
moving, but the CD drive is still spinning away.
Writing image: 14%
Overall Progress: 14%
Buffer Status: 98%
Estimated writing speed 4208KB/s (28.05x)
and in /var/log/messages, I get only:
Apr 10 17:17:20 alfred kernel: usb 4-3: USB disconnect, address 4
Now I still can't kill k3b nor the cdrecord processes, even with a
signal 9. Rebooting or shutting down hangs at killing ALSA because it
can't unload the (disconnected) CD burner's audio device.
Here's what I have tried so far:
1. Toggling the PnP OS setting in the BIOS = No difference.
2. Reload uhci-hcd module (as suggested in a web forum) = Did nothing
but kill off ALL USB ports (including my mouse!)
3. kill automount daemon - No difference.
So I kept looking.... and I *think* I may have found the answer.
In lilo.conf there is a flag for the default kernel that reads:
acpi=ht
I changed this to
acpi=off
...on the advice of one of the postings on some forum (I lost the
location because I rebooted without thinking about where I was looking...)
So I booted with power management off and so far, after about an hour,
it's still connected.
I have NO idea how there is a relation between ACPI and a USB CD burner,
but hey... I'm not complaining. At least not till I try to do this on a
laptop........
