You might also be more interested in one of the BSDs, either Free or
Net, one of which aims to run on as wide a variety of hardware as
possible, the other to be the most stable and robust, and then there's
OpenBSD, which has as its goal to be the most secure.  Since you seem
to be after running on ancient hardware, I'd try out NetBSD, since it
still runs quite well on PDP-era machines and Vaxen ;)
