Hmmm, I don't seem to have that set anywhere in my .gnus.el and I'm on:

  GNU Emacs 21.3.50.1 (i386-pc-linux-gnu, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll\
  bars) of 2005-01-31 on taz, modified by Debian
