Here at work, we have many people using Dell Latitude D600 notebooks,
with flavors of RedHat from 9 to Fedora Core 3.  We use both wireless
and wired at the same time, with internal wireless.  I'd say the
hardware is linux-friendly.

For a really inexspensive laptop, I bought a Acer for around $700 off
TigerDirect.com, but I would say that the Dell is much more sturdy in
comparison and worth the extra money if your travelling with it. 
Actually, I can not say if the Acer wireless card worked under Linux
anyway.  One thing to note too:  a 15" screen is a lot bigger than a
14" screen, so make note of the screen size you're getting.
