Why not listen to a direct feed? I listen to wumb
(http://www.wumb.org) all the time with mpg123:

mpg123 --headphones http://www.Live365.com/play/288258?session=wumb919

or xmms:
xmms http://www.Live365.com/play/288258?session=wumb919

for which they have a diskwriter plugin.

(Is there a direct feed for NPR?)
