 I don't recall anyone suggesting a moderated list, just some
demonstration of self-control.  At a minimum I'd say any such threads
should have [OT] in the subject line, so my computer can do the
filtering, rather than ME doing it.  Maybe you don't mind vgrepping
out the noise, but I begrudge the time necessary to "simply skip over"
the garbage.  I'd rather political discussion not directly relevant to
the LUG and Linux were not here at all, since conventions like the
[OT] are generally forgotten in practice.

I'm hoping people will be polite enough to keep discussions which are
not related to Linux or the LUG from dropping the signal-to-noise
ratio of the group to the point where there's as much noise as there
is signal.
