UML & Debian?

Hi folks,

Does anyone have any experience with User Mode Linux and Debian?

I need to set up an environment where I can test the automated
installation/configuration of a system (via FAI). Normally, I'd hook
up a monitor and keyboard to the system, or perhaps a serial console.
However, I need something which doesn't require so much hardware, and
that I can play with remotely via ssh.

UML would seem to fit the bill. I need to have a system boot over the
net via PXE/DHCP and load a kernel via bootp, and have access to the
pre-boot (i.e.bios) environment to toggle the PXE boot capability
on/off and then be able to "remotely" log into the installing system
via ssh. In short, I need a virtual machine I can test my FAI
envionment with.

Everytime I've attempted to play with UML, I've given up in
frustration, but the last time was at least a year ago. Has it gotten
better? Are there any recommended HOWTOs out there (google certainly
turns up a fair number). Has anyone done this type of thing before?
If so, are there better tools than UML? (VMWare and other proprietary
ideas are not an option).

All ideas welcome.

Thanks.
